About

Kelly grew up in western Kentucky where she early exhibited a talent for art. She coated most available surfaces in drawings, from school assignments to her grandmother’s bedroom wall. While in school she developed a love for fantasy and began creating notebooks full of characters and their stories to share with her friends. At the university level, her passion for art and writing led her to a study of poetry, ceramics, and language. She is now happily working on various fantasy novels.

Her interest in fantasy began with The Hobbit, read to her as a bedtime story. Anne McCaffrey’s Pern series and Brian Jacques’ Redwall series soon became favorites, and she has recently enjoyed reading Diana Wynne Jones and Terry Pratchett. She has always relished a good mystery, too, from Nancy Drew to Sherlock Holmes. However, both her writing and art are more influenced by the work of Hajime Yatate, Naoko Takeuchi, and her experiences with adventure and role-playing games.

On to the more interesting stuff!

I’ve always been nerdy as heck despite being very athletic when I was growing up. I did gymnastics, softball, soccer, marching band, bike riding, and creek exploring; and the rest of the time I pretended to be a Power Ranger, Ninja Turtle, or Sailor Scout. I played tons of great video games, and I tried a few Kamehameha attacks when no one was looking (you never know). Some of my first doodles are reimaginings of stages from Mario, scenes of my older brother playing basketball with me, and action shots of the Enterprise from Star Trek. I learned to draw the Starfleet insignia before I figured out which way the letter “R” was supposed to face.

I was once known for my rather majestic hair. Sadly, no magical Rapunzel powers when I sang, though that’s probably fortunate since I’m a terrible singer. I’m very tall (5’11”). I used to feel awkward about it, but grew to enjoy being able to see over crowds and reach high places. Still irritating to be greeted with “Wow, you’re tall!” each time I meet someone, though. I have determined that I must have been a cat in a previous life. This is based on my desires to stay indoors, curl up and be warm at any opportunity, and eat lots of tuna. I spend my time, these days, desperately trying to turn ideas into words as well as teaching myself to paint digitally. My philosophy regarding all things is “No nonsense.”
